The population according to the 2011 census is 1,272 residents. The name of the settlement until 1955 was Tigani ("Pan" in English), so renamed to Pythagorio from the International Organization of Pythagoreans in honor of the great philosopher Pythagoras who came from Samos.
Samos is famous for celebrities provided in Greek history, such as Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicurus and the astronomer Aristarchus, allegedly planned the first heliocentric map, and others.
Pythagorio is a lovely cosmopolitan coastal town, particularly in the summer. It is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Samos. The port of current settlement coincides with the port of the ancient city, which Herodotus describes it as one of the wonders of the island and is considered the oldest artificial port in the Mediterranean. The ruins of the Greek Roman monuments and the impressive "Tunnel or Aqueduct of Eupalinos" along with the Heraion of Samos, was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1992.
In the beggining of the video you can see the ancient walls of the city make by the tyrant Polycrates 6 century Β.C. The walls were about 6500 meters long and the ancient watchtower the only one that survived from 40.
You can also see the statue of Pythagoras in the port. The old Byzantine castle, that was strengthened during the Revolution of 1821, the tower of the Chief of revolution Lykourgos Logothetis, and next to the Church of "Metamorphosis (Transfiguration of Christ)", which was built in 1831 by Logothetis and other leaders of the island, fulfilling a vow made after decisively winning the battle of Mycale against Ottomans in August 1824.
Next to the church of Metamorphosis is the Early Christian Church Basilica of the Castle (6th century).
The drone camera visits next the Monastery of Spiliani, which is built inside a cave, a few kilometers northwest of Pythagorio. Afterwards, it visits the long beach of Pythagorio where you can see at some point the baths of Cleopatra the Queen of Egypt when the island was resort for Roman officials and chosen as a holiday destination for Antony and Cleopatra.
